But Christmas came and went. Winter turned into spring and spring to summer and there was no word from Anthony.

The final vestiges of Amy’s optimism were shattered by the announcement, eleven months later, of the engagement of Anthony Matthews and Henrietta Barton.

‘I pride myself on the match as I made the introduction,’ Septimus remarked, cracking his breakfast boiled egg into two halves that reminded Amy of the way her heart currently felt.

Septimus for once noticed Amy’s anguish. Her father rarely showed interest in anyone or anything that was not to his own advantage, and that he should assist Anthony in such a way was too cruel a twist of fate.

‘Did you have hopes in that direction? Never mind, my girl. Trust me, you are better off. He could not have kept you in the manner I do, and I could not do without you to assist me. After you have eaten, find me the volume of Tacitus on the third or fourth shelf. I have a notion to write a narrative ballad concerning the Batavian Rebellion.’

He left the table, leaving Amy to obey. She dropped her head in her hands and wept, wild despair and grief building inside her. She would not have cared how Anthony kept her. She had always known she would have a generous dowry, and when she inherited Standing Stone Lodge she would have brought more to the marriage. Septimus would have had to learn to do without her and rely on his servants or himself.

Perhaps he was right and Amy’s destiny was to remain at her father’s side.

She wiped away the tears and went to the library in search of the book, determined to put Anthony Matthews out of her mind for ever.
